Growing up in Mindanao, Philippines exposed me to ethnic dances and songs that have some similarities to those from Indonesia. However, I was not aware of our shared traditions till I started performing briefly during my college years in southern Philippines. I come from a region where community events usually come with performances of our region’s ethnic songs and dances. It wasn’t till I started traveling and migrated to the US did I learn to fully appreciate the cultural heritage of my home region. Joining Dharma Swara Gamelan is a way for me respect and learn more of the culture that I used to take for granted.
