José first discovered gamelan while taking a world music class as an undergraduate in Pittsburgh. After participating in several workshops over the years, he is delighted to be part of such a dynamic Balinese gamelan ensemble, in the heart of his native Queens. His musical interests also include Japanese taiko, Indian tabla, hammered dulcimer, acoustic guitar, and violin/fiddle. By day he manages an infectious disease laboratory, and is also an adjunct professor of genetics and microbiology.
