Stephanie first experienced gamelan music through a serendipitous encounter while traveling through Japan. She was immediately entranced by the dynamic and complex cyclical rhythms, and humbled by the spirit evoked through the collaboration amongst the musicians and their reverence towards the gamelan itself. As an end-of-life doula and a former theology graduate student, she is particularly interested in the role of gamelan in funerary rituals as well as in religious ceremonies.

Outside of the musical realm, Stephanie is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine who practices at her community clinic, The Rooted Refuge, right here in Ridgewood, Queens. She is also a licensed massage therapist, board certified herbalist, and local reptile rescuer.
