VICTORIA LO MELLIN
I have always been fascinated by the concept of paradox, and immediately saw the inherent (and beautiful) paradox of gamelan. It is an art and discipline striving for mechanical precision alongside emotive flexibility–divergent ideas that continue to propel an ancient human tradition. Gamelan is also synergistic, forcing one to cultivate acute awareness and coordination of one’s self and her peers. We learn so much about ourselves and what we can create together. The effect is awe-inspiring for audiences and performers alike, and facilitating such discoveries is the primary reason that I continue to be a student and performer of gamelan, and a member of DS.
